HS Basketball c/o 2026: 9th Grade Freshmen Watchlist PG's

Prospect-Central - Class of 2026Point Guards

Written by: Prospect-Central

It really is true what they say about time; ⏰ it flies by and waits for no man. That certainly is the case when it comes to high school freshmen watchlist's. Every year we get older and every year they stay the same age. It was actually 10-years ago when Prospect-Central released its first high school basketball freshmen watchlist and it's safe to say some of the players have lived up to the hype.

It was for the Class of 2016 and it made up half of the 2017 NBA Draft's Lottery selections, including 4 of the top 5 picks! 👀 Here are just a few of the recognizable 9th grade names that were featured at the time; Jayson Tatum, Bam Adebayo, De'Aaron Fox, Lonzo Ball, Malik Monk, Josh Jackson, Dennis Smith, Jr., Harry Giles, Thon Maker, Payton Pritchard, Terrance Ferguson, & Caleb Swanigan (RIP).

Now just as those players were beginning to embark on their high school basketball journey, c/o 2026 recruits were turning 4 & 5-years old. 😳 Fast forward to the present day however, and you'll find those same little kids, aren't so little anymore. It's their time to shine now and from the looks of it, they seem more than capable of capturing the moment.

Ikenna Alozie: (NJ) Class of 2026
Another thing people say about time; it changes everything. So while most of these Class of 2026 recruits should go on to play college basketball and some of them will even play in the NBA one day, nothing is guaranteed in life, as time always finds a way of altering one's plans in one way or another. That's definitely case when it comes to HS freshmen.

For example, by the time they graduate high school some of these recruits will have reclassified both up and down a grade, some will have quit basketball to pursue other sports (most likely football), and some of them will have even ended their athletic dreams altogether to focus on other passions, like dancing on Tik Tok perhaps :) 🤦🏽‍♂️

Then again, for the players that end up becoming the cream of the crop, they're about to stack more bread than most of us will see in a lifetime. From NIL (name, image, likeness) money to $100K 💵 contracts from Overtime Elite, the landscape of high school basketball is big business for the players now, which is yet another thing that has changed over time. I can only imagine what everything will look like in another 4-years once these recruits have ended their high school careers come 2026.

Last but not least time changes a person's body, especially the bodies of 14 & 15-year old's. So while these recruits are labeled a certain position, it's more for organizational purposes than anything else, considering some of them will change positions as time goes by and they continue to grow into their frames. As you'll find out later, genes 🧬 work in mysterious ways and play a predominant role in the life of a basketball player. There are over 500 incoming high school freshmen selected for Prospect-Central's c/o 2026 Watchlist, separated into four positional sections, with 10 players featured for each section, 20 honorable mentions, & the rest are names to keep an eye on for the future. 👀

Stacking up with its predecessor's, Class of 2026 definitely has some legit prospects for the next level, but as of right now it appears to be an average class with no generational talent. Of course nothing is set in stone as more players should emerge throughout the years. For the incoming high school freshmen featured in this article however, time is of the essence. High school may seem like it lasts an eternity, but in reality it’s just a blur and the clock is about to start ticking. So, how good can the Class of 2026 become once it's all said and done? Clearly only time will tell. ⏳

* c/o 2026 PG's; alphabetical order: SG / SF / PF/C's

Ikenna Alozie pg/sg / 6'4'' 180 / New Jersey
Even though all of these names are listed in alphabetical order, it's ironic that Ikenna Alozie is the first player being featured, because as of right now he just might be the top guard in his class. 👀 Definitely has the look of a future McDonald's 🍔 All-American. He's a dynamic combo guard who plays with a ton of flair, lives above the rim, makes incredible plays look mundane, displays excellent court vision, and is a hard-nosed defender who is tougher than a coffin nail. Bottom line, he's going to be a name that sticks around for a while and will definitely be a sought after recruit over the next 4-years of HS basketball. Even though he lives in NJ, he already has a scholarship offer from Arizona State, which just goes to show you the news about this kid is spreading fast. Plays his AAU ball with NJ Scholars and has already been playing HS ball for Camden High since the 8th grade. Look for him and c/o 2023's No.1 recruit D.J. Wagner to make an impressive backcourt for the Panthers 🐆 this upcoming season, as they make a run for their 13th state championship. Locals like to say there are three religions in Camden, New Jersey; Christianity, Islam, and basketball. If that's the case, they may have just found their new messiah in Ikenna Alozie. ⛹🏽‍♂️
Jasiah Cannady
pg / 6'1'' 155 / Maryland

There are three guarantees in life; death, taxes, and the DMV producing high-major basketball recruits year after year, especially guards. The Class of 2026 is no different and one of the top rising 9th graders coming out of the DMV this year is without question Jasiah Cannady. An established veteran on the grassroots circuit, Cannady has been a well known name nationally for roughly half-a-decade now. The fact that he's still a legit prospect for the next level after all these years is actually quite impressive. Smaller guards tend to slip through the cracks as time goes by, but not Jasiah Cannady. He's not only still a relevant name, he continues to thrive and is on track to to be an elite recruit from c/o 2026. A recent growth spurt has definitely helped his game, as its given him the ability to score on all three-levels with relative ease. Couple that with his ball skills, shooting touch, and alpha dog mentality; and it's only a matter of time before Cannady is lighting up 🔥 high school score boards across the country. More of a scoring guard than a facilitator at the moment, he'll need to work on that aspect of his game as time goes by. Plays AAU ball with Team Melo and high school basketball for Bishop O'Connell in Virginia. Another rising 9th grader featured on PC's Watchlist, 6'5'' Adam Oumiddoch, will join Cannady at Bishop O'Connell and the two freshmen should make a formidable duo for the Knights. Received his first scholarship offer from Virginia Tech on June 12th and there should be many more to come. Look for Jasiah ‘the candy man’ Cannady to continue to make a name for himself over the next 4-years of high school basketball. 💯
Jachai Cantave pg / 6'1'' 160 / Texas
Originally from the Class of 2025, Jachai Cantave is a perfect example of how reclassifying can be beneficial for a players development. While he's always been one of the more solid players in his age bracket, his game has really started to pop 💥 recently, as he's beginning to standout amongst his peers. He's a lefty with a smooth shooting stroke, tight handles, high B-ball IQ, & a willing defender. Very confident player who doesn't get rattled very easily. Even though Cantave's definitely a bucket getter, he's more than capable of handling point guard duties despite being wired to score. Plays his AAU ball for the talented Blue Chips squad and will join his brother c/o 2024's Jaden Cantave at Antascocita HS in Texas for his upcoming freshman season. Received his first scholarship offer from Kelvin Sampson and the Houston Cougars in June & his second offer from LSU in July. Judging by the trajectory of this 9th graders game, there should be many more offers on the horizon. 🌅
Marcus Johnson
pg / 6'1'' 160 / Ohio
If you ever had to pinpoint a recruit that was "ground zero" to where the Class of 2026 first burst onto the scene, no doubt that player would be Marcus Johnson. He's been the No. 1 player in his class since the 2nd grade (lol) 🤷🏼‍♂️ and essentially hasn't looked back; since he's still considered by some to be at the top of the totem pole. We've seen this before though. Small, diminutive sized guards under 5-foot-10 labeled the top players in their class well before they step foot onto a high school court. Damon Harge, Jr., Jashaun Agosto, Chase Adams, Zion Harmon, and Julian Newman are just a few examples, but when it comes to Marcus Johnson, things appear to be different. 👍🏽 For starters those players never cracked the 6-foot plateau and while it appeared Marcus Johnson was destined for the same outcome, a recent growth spurt has changed all that. He's over 6-feet now with room to grow and is definitely a legit high-major prospect for the next level and beyond. Alreday holds multiple D-1 scholarship offers, including recent offers from West Virginia and Cincinnati. Plays his AAU ball for Adidas sponsored Wildcat Select and will attend Garfield Heights High School in Ohio for his freshman year. His father, Sonny Johnson, is not only the head coach at Garfield Heights HS, but was also Ohio's Mr. Basketball in 1998, so Marcus will have all the tutelage and genes 🧬 neccessary to go very far in the game of basketball. 🙌🏼
Mike Jones, Jr. pg / 5'11" 160 / South Carolina
Who is Mike Jones? 🤔 Who?! Mike Jones! Who?! Mike Jones! I'll tell you who Mike Jones is; "Four four's he's trippin'. Wood grain he's gripping. Catch him in the lane switching with the paint dripping. Turn your neck and your game missing!" 😀 But seriously though, Mike Jones, Jr. is not only one of the best rising HS freshmen in South Carolina, he's one of the best in the country. He has a lot of wiggle in his game and is an absolute blur on the court. Super shifty with the ball in his hands. Displays excellent footwork and he's crafty af. In complete control on the basketball court, despite usually being the fastest player in the gym. Needs to get stronger obviously, but definitely a high-major talent. Plays AAU ball for the prestigious Team Loaded program and graduated from Comenius Middle School in South Carolina. While Mike Jones, Jr. is flying slightly under the radar, he won't be for long. Because before the ice was in his grill, before he got his major deal, these college coaches wouldn't give a damn if he was ill for real. But back then they didn't want him, now he's hot they all on him. I said, back then they didn't want him, now he's hot they all on him. So if any coaches happen to be reading this right now; "281-33oh-eight zero zero fo...hit Mike Jones up on the low, cuz Mike Jones about to blow!” 🔥
Randy Livingston, Jr. pg / 6'1'' 150 / Florida
When it comes to sports, genes matter; it’s just that simple. Of the four major sports in North America (NBA, NFL, MLB, NHL) there's no sport where genes 🧬 matter more than basketball. A study done a few years ago found that 17.5% of NFL players and 14.5% of MLB players were related to an elite athlete. An elite athlete being anyone who has played a sport professionally, in the NCAA, or at the national level. When it came to NBA players however, the numbers were popping at 48.5%! 🤯 So before we delve into Randy Livingston, Jr's game, let's educate the reader’s on his daddy first. The 6-foot-4 Livingston, Sr. went to HS with Peyton Manning at Isidore Newman in New Orleans, where he was named HS co-player of the year in 1992 (w/ Jason Kidd) & 1993 (w/ Rasheed Wallace). He was a McDonald's 🍔 All-American and was even ranked by some as the No. 1 recruit in c/o 1993 over the likes of Jerry Stackhouse. He was drafted in the 2nd round of the 1996 NBA Draft & played in the league on and off for 10-years. Today he is the head basketball coach for his alma mater Isidore Newman, where I'm sure you recruit junkies already know is currently home to Peyton's nephew Arch Manning, the No. 1 HS football recruit in c/o 2023 and recent University of Texas commit. That being said, Randy Livingston, Jr. has some big shoes to fill, but I'm sure he's up for the task. He's been playing very well on the AAU circuit for Louisiana's LOFDL squad and as of right now he’ll attend Calvary Christian Academy (FL) for his freshman year of HS. Already holds offers from St. John's, Michigan State, Georgetown, & Cal, and appears well on his way to living up to the Livingston legacy. 💯
Dylan Mingo
pg / 6'2" 145 / New York

One of the younger recruits in the Class of 2026, Dylan Mingo is still just 13-years old and won't turn 14 until September. 👀 The fact he’s a rising 9th grader is somewhat of a surprise considering only a few years ago he was ranked top 3 in the Class of 2027. Since he reclassified though, he's flown somewhat under the radar, which I'm sure will only motivate him moving forward. Mingo’s got long arms, a wiry frame, and clearly has a lot of growing left in him considering his age. Couple that with his lightning quick reflexes, exceptional ball skills, tremendous court vision and high B-ball IQ, and you have all the makings of another big time prospect coming out of the Big Apple. 🍎 Speaking of New York, the Empire State appears to be somewhat loaded with high-major recruits especially point guards, a number of which could have easily cracked this list instead of Mingo, but Dylan's overall production ultimately won out. He's been killing it on the AAU circuit with the legendary NY Lightning ⚡️ squad and at 13-years old was averaging 19 ppg playing varsity basketball for Farmingdale High School last season. Now while New York might be the big city of dreams, everything in New York ain't always what it seems. You might get fooled if you come from out of town, but Dylan Mingo's coming from Farmingdale and gets down! 🗽
Jayden Moore
pg / 5'11'' 170 / Minnesota
I'm old enough to remember when Kevin Durant got dragged by the internet for criticizing an 8th grade basketball players flashy move on Twitter. Of course this happened back in December, but Durant simply tweeted, "This $h!t stinks", 💩 and all hell broke loose after that. The tweet went viral and it was enough to cause a mini-meltdown from fans and an uproar of outrage for the superstar. So much so he even had to defend himself to reporters the next day. 🤦🏼‍♂️ Long story short, the player responsible for Kevin Durant's  obscenity laced vitriolic tweet; yup, you guessed it; c/o 2026's very own Jayden Moore! The first thing that stands out when watching Jayden hoop is his maturity on the basketball court. Blessed with an extremely high B-ball IQ, Jayden's a very cerebral player with excellent court awareness, vision, and ball skills. A consummate floor general who always seems to make the right play, it's easy to see why he's already being compared to fellow Minnesota native Tyus Jones. Plays his AAU ball for Terell Suggs' J-Sizzle squad and has been playing high school ball for Minnesota's perenial powerhouse Hopkins High School since the 7th grade. Averaged 11 ppg last season as an 8th grader, which helped him earn his first scholarship offer from West Virginia back in June. His father, 6-foot-7 Kenny Moore, played college ball for Tennessee State over a decade ago, so you'd like to think Jayden has a few more inches in him left to grow. It's clear Jayden Moore and Hopkins High School are going to make some serious noise in the state of Minnesota over the next 4-years. Luckily for all of their opponents, they can go purify themselves in the waters of Lake Minnetonka after they take those L's! 🌊
Nasir Price
pg/sg / 6'3'' 150 / Texas
It Was Written that if Nasty Nas is in your area, he's about to cause mass hysteria. That's certainly the case if he has a basketball in his hands. The Texas native is oozing with potential and appears to have all the tools neccessary to make a living playing the game at the highest level one day. As of right now however, Nasir Price is easily one of the top rising 9th graders in the country. He's a long and wiry combo guard with a plethora of moves and the ability to get to the rack with ease. He has excellent speed and quickness, terrific athleticism, and a non-stop motor. To sum it up, Nasir Price definitely has that dog 🐶 in him. Similar game to fellow Katy, Texas native De'Aaron Fox to some degree. Plays his AAU ball with Houston Hoops, which ironically was the same AAU team Fox played for. He'll attend Seven Lakes HS in Houston his freshman year and will be an impact player the minute he steps foot on campus. Received his first scholarship offer from Tulsa this past December and his second offer from TCU back in June. I'm no fortune teller,🔮but if I had to put my Nastradamus hat on and predict the future, I can easily see Nasty Nas becoming a big-time recruit from the c/o 2026. That's really not a bold prediction though, because when it comes to playing the game of basketball, Nasir Price is most definitely Illmatic. ✊🏽
Kevin Roberts, Jr. pg/sg / 6'3'' 185 / Mississippi
There are some big-time dual-sport athletes in the Class of 2026. Prospect-Central's Freshmen Watchlist is littered with a number of players who've already received multiple D-1 scholarship offers in football. 🏈 That being said, Kevin Roberts, Jr. might just be the best out of all of them. Not in football however, even though he is a standout recruit in that as well, nope; it's baseball that's his first love. ⚾️ As good as he is in basketball, and he's definitely good, he's an even better baseball player and currently ranked No. 6 in the c/o 2026 by PerfectGame. He primarily plays shortstop, hits for power and average, has a big arm all over the field and huge upside on the mound, as is evident by his 90 mph fastball. Oh yeah, he's also still only 13-years old! 🤯 (actually turned 14 after this was written). 🤷🏼‍♂️ He's such a good baseball player, he'll probably end up pursuing that as his sport of choice. I mean, he already has his own baseball card for crying out loud. For the time being however, he's a legitimate prospect in basketball and his game should not be taken lightly. Plays AAU ball for Rodney Hood's Mississippi Express program and he'll attend West Lauderdale High School (MS) for his freshman year. Already holds several D-1 offers in baseball, but in basketball it appears only Miami & South Carolina have offered thus far. Duke & Kansas are showing interest though, which obviously means he's got some serious game. It would be quite an accomplishment if Kevin Roberts, Jr. could parlay his athleticism into a career in both sports, as unlikely as that may be. Here's a quick synopsis of some players excelling in both sports. The two most notable professional baseball players that were also drafted into the NBA; Hall-of-Famer's Dave Winfield, who was also drafted into the NFL, and Tony Gwynn, who was actually drafted by both the NBA & MLB on the same day. 😳 Some notable NBA players drafted into MLB; Kevin Johnson, Dell Curry, Charlie Ward, Scott Burrell, and Pat Connaughton. The two most notable players to actually play in both leagues; Dave DeBusschere & Danny Ainge; and excluding Michael Jordan, the last person to play both professional baseball (MLB) and professional basketball (NBA) was Mark Hendrickson (NBA 1996-00 / MLB 2002-11). Pretty exclusive list. Time to buy me some peanuts and crackerjacks and see if Kevin Roberts, Jr. can hit one out of the ball park and accomplish something few could only fathom. ⚾️ 🏀
